A wonderful early retail display piece with beautiful wear and an unusual articulated thumb. Whether displayed on a shelf or used to hold a favorite treasure, it's one of those objects that immediately sparks conversation.

Measurements

  • Height: 11 ⅛"
  • Base Diameter: 3 ½"

Why I Love It

  • Likely a late 19th- to early 20th-century glove display hand used in a department store or haberdashery.
  • Features a movable thumb, allowing gloves to be slipped on and off the hand more easily—a clever design detail not commonly found on decorative wooden hands.
  • Beautiful aged wood with decades of honest wear and rich patina.
  • Remnants of dark surface residue on several fingertips, likely from years of handling or display, adding to its authentic character.
  • Makes a wonderful sculptural object on a bookshelf, console, or cabinet.
  • Perfect for displaying rosaries, antique spectacles, pocket watch chains, ribbons, jewelry, or simply enjoyed as an object on its own.
  • The turned pedestal base gives it an elegant presentation while keeping it stable for display.

A Little History

Wooden display hands like this were used by glove shops and department stores to showcase leather gloves for customers. Unlike artist's mannequin hands, which have articulated fingers for drawing, retail glove display hands were typically carved as a solid form. On better-quality examples like this one, the thumb pivots to make dressing and removing fitted gloves much easier. It's a clever little feature that speaks to its original purpose and is one of my favorite details.

Condition

  • Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout.
  • Thumb remains movable.
  • Surface scratches, scuffs, and patina consistent with decades of use.
  • Dark residue or discoloration remains on several fingertips.
  • Minor wear to the base from age and display.
  • No maker's mark found.
