One of the things I love about this portrait is that it's not trying to be perfect. It's carrying two centuries of history. The artist painted this in the late 1700s or early 1800s, but deliberately dressed the young sitter in clothing inspired by portraits from the late 1500s and early 1600s. So you're looking at an artist who was already looking back in time. Then it's housed in this incredible chunky Rococo frame from the late 1800s. It has beautiful craquelure, the panel has gently warped over the centuries, and the frame has honest losses that tell you it's lived a real life.

A beautifully timeworn Continental School portrait depicting a young gentleman in late Renaissance-inspired dress, housed in an impressive late 19th-century gilt Rococo frame.
